Updated Pics (Ghorgon, Wargors, Great Bray Shamens)

Well, as promised… updated pics of my characters and big guy.  I’m not in love with the Ghorgon conversion, but I am satified with the paint job.  I tested out some new tips / techniques that I saw on youtube.  Made my own wash.  It really helped clean up some sloppy dry brushing that I did.  In all I think I spent a total of 3 hours painting these models.  Not fast by HRR’s standards, but blazing for mine.

A couple complaints I have.  I didn’t realize I pulled the same body type when I was converting my wargors from the new bestigor plastics.  That is STILL driving me nuts!!!  I forgot to paint a banner before I washed the BSB.  Now I’ll have to go back, paint the banner, then wash it again.  No big issues, but something that kinda bothers me.

Up next is convert / paint new harpy models.  Finish up the movement trays.  Then finally build a display board.

Lemme know what you all think!  Thanks.

PEACE!!!

Beastmen Rev 4.1

OK, I’m pretty sure this will be my list for the Lone Wolf Indy GT next month.  Please throw darts at it.  I need to understand what the weaknesses are and what I can do to protect myself from them.  As always, comments and critiques are welcome.

Lords:

1 Great Bray-Shaman @ 305.0 Pts

Lore of Beasts; Magic Level 4; Braystaff

     Book of Ashur [70.0]

– I dropped all magic items from him and gave him the book.  I also made this d00d the General.  Wild Form is such a key spell for me.  I’m hoping the +1 will help make sure it gets cast.  +1 to dispel is an added bonus.

1 Great Bray-Shaman @ 309.0 Pts

General; Lore of Shadow; Magic Level 4; 2ndWeapon; Braystaff

     Talisman of Preservation [45.0]

     Jagged Dagger [10.0]

     Gouge-Tusks [15.0]

– Can’t argue with this d00d.  He’s been a champ for me.  Can’t really make freakin’ ward save with him, so I’ve actually considered dropping the 4+ ward.  I know I’ll regret it if I do though.

Heroes:

 1 Wargor @ 206.0 Pts

     Heavy Armour; Shield; Battle Standard

     Beast Banner [75.0]

     Gnarled Hide [15.0]

 – The only guy that has been consistent since day 1.  He’s never let me down.  The standard is golden!

 1 Wargor @ 134.0 Pts

     Heavy Armour

     The Steel-Claws [35.0]

     Seeds of Rebirth [10.0]

 – Slightly revised.  I added a 6+ regeneration save to him… think Wolverine.

 1 Wargor @ 139.0 Pts

     Great Weapon

     Armour of Destiny [50.0]

 – Modified this guy a bit.  He was a Brass Cleaver, but I took some advice from HRR.  More attacks in nice, but what I really needed was a hammer in the unit.  I think 3 S6 attacks with hatred should fill that spot.  Armor of Destiny should make sure the ASL attacks see the light of day.

Core:

37 Gor Herd @ 329.0 Pts

     2ndWeapon; Standard; Musician

     1 Foe-Render @ [10.0] Pts

37 Gor Herd @ 329.0 Pts

     2ndWeapon; Standard; Musician

     1 Foe-Render @ [10.0] Pts

– Once characters are added, the unit will be a full 40 models.  Looks really nice on the table, and performs well too!

Special:

23 Bestigor Herd @ 309.0 Pts

Great Weapon; Heavy Armour; Standard; Musician

     Standard of Discipline [15.0]

– Home unit for the General.  Adds to his leadership, and does well protecting him.  I can bail from the unit if things look ugly.

 5 Harpies @ 55.0 Pts

5 Harpies @ 55.0 Pts

5 Harpies @ 55.0 Pts

– Finally bumped these units to a total of three.  It’s weird, two units just weren’t doing what I needed them to do, and three seems to be too much.  I’m going to error on the side of caution here.  In the ‘ard Boyz tournament three units of Chaos Furies were so important for my game play.  I think I’ve finally got back to where I need to be.  I’m going to have to convert new models though.  Check back for updates.  Spoiler alert: I’m totally ripping off Tim G’s conversions.

Rare:

1 Ghorgon @ 275.0 Pts

     Frenzy

– This guy rarely lets me down.  Things I gotta be careful for.  Poison and Warmachines.  Other than that, the big guy is a champ!

Additional Casting Dice: 0

Additional Dispel Dice: 0

Models in Army: 119

Total Army Cost: 2500.0

Updated Pics

Ok, I got a few pics of some of my recent projects.

Up first is the Ghorgon.  Pics should show plastic bits that were added to finish up the armor, metal straps to fix the log weapons onto the Ghorgons arms, completed chain mail.

Next are pics of the characters I’ve converted.  Included is a simple BSB.  Nothing fancy, It’s pretty much a bare armed Bestigor SB.  Also included is a Wargor with a Brass Cleaver and shield.   Finally is a Wargor with Steel Claws.

Finally are pics of my rebased units.  I rebased using bases from Litko and Steel bottoms to stick to the movement trays.  I intend to write a product review some day.  I also made some unit filler trees (by hand!).  Intent was to show the herd marching from the woods.  I have a few pics of one of my Gor hordes and the Bestigor unit.

As always, comments / advice / suggestions are welcomed and encouraged.

Thank you.  PEACE!!!

Back Again!

Quick update… Ok, so I haven’t “been feeling it” the past several days.  I’ve taken some HUGE losses.  My projects are turning out to the quality I’d like ’em to (doesn’t it suck that the mind’s eye vision is way cooler than what you actually paint / convert?).  In addition, real life has been cutting into my time.  So, I’m “forcing” myself to get back into the groove.  I’d appreciate any words of encouragement or motivational speeches any of you all may have that you can spare.

So…

Ghorgon Update:

Conversion is complete.  It doesn’t look awesome, but it’s good enough and hopefully anyone familiar with the army will know what it’s supposed to be.  I sculpted more chain mail on his back, and glued the bits onto his shoulders and wrist.  Bulks him out some, so that helps his wimpy’ness.  I also sculpted some strips of metal where the log weapons have been riveted on his extra set of arms.  They turned out pretty well.

Other Conversions:

I’ve converted three new Wargors.  I have the limited edition BSB, but I don’t like how he ranks up, so I converted a new BSB.  I have also started bringing more close combat Wargors.  I have converted one to have steel claws and another to have the brass cleaver.

Bases Update:

I’m going to re-do all my bases for my army.  I ordered several wooden bases from Litko.  Other than arriving late, they look like they’re going to work.  I’m going for a forest theme.  Idea is to have my guys marching out of the forest.

Gaming update:

Well, let’s just say I’ve been getting my teeth kicked in pretty consistently.  I’m not sure how many games I’ve played, but my last two included a 5 point draw and a pretty solid victory (finally!).  Other than that, I’ve had my lunch handed to me on a regular basis.

Future Projects:

I have to get ready for the Lone Wolf GT, so I have a few things I need to accomplish.  I need to paint the new characters I’ve converted.  I also need to paint the Ghorgon.  I need to make new movement trays.  I also need to make a new display board.  I believe I’m going to convert new harpies too (totally stealing an idea from Tim G).  Finally, I’ll have to settle in on a list and learn how to play it.

Once again, words of encouragement are welcome and required over here.  I’m in a total slump, so I’m calling on our little community to push me.  Our gaming group has started their own blog (which I also post at).  Please check it out too.  Link should be in my blog roll.  Thank you so much for checking in.

PEACE!

2000 Point Table Top Tournament

So, back from the tournament.  Our group had 5 peeps representing in an 18 man tournament.  HornedRatRob brought his Skaven, Rogar of the Hill People brought Lizzy’s, as did Evil Avi, Skurt brought Ogre Kingdoms, and I brought my Khorne Demons (Beast are not completely painted yet).  Trip up was fun and without any issues.  Note: I totally forgot my camera in Rogar’s van, so no pics for you!  I suggest checking out HRR’s blog for pics.  He’s got pics of our game.  I’ll report about that later.

The site: If you all are ever in the Kansas City area, you should check out Table Top Games and Hobbies.  The store is EVERYTHING one could hope for in a game shop.  Stocked shelves, Huge / Clean gaming space, excellent tables / terrain, friendly staff, and the Ower is a great guy.  Check ’em out… seriously.

The list: Bloodthirster (BT) with re-rolls CC hits, and killing blow ax.  BSB (-2Ld banner, armor of Khorne).  Herald (armor of Khorne).  40 Bloodletters (BL) full cmd.  39 BL full cmd.  3 X 5 Chaos Furries (CF).

Game 1: DoC v Dark Elves

First off, don’t change a list you prepared late at night.  You make dumb decisions and wonder what you were thinking the rest of the following day.  I KNEW I’d have to face many hydras and of course knew that HRR was bringing an HPA, so what do I do?  I equip my BT with the killing blow ax instead of the flaming ax.  I can tell my tactical genius has impressed the readers.  I’ll pause to allow time for you all to regain your composure.  Anywho, my opponent brought a huge spearmen unit (with Supreme sorceress packing the sac dag… of course), a large unit of cross-bowmen (with a lvl sorceress), a large unit of cold ones (with BSB and Noble), and of course 2 Hydra’s (man really wishin’ I brought my flaming ax).  I’ll keep the report short.  My CF’s set-up the cold one’s for a flank charge by a horde-0-BLs.  He bounced the Snake Eyes to pass the break test (then we high-5’d), but they all died the following turn.  BT took down one of the Hydra’s (but it took him some time).  Other horde of BL’s took massive damage from Xbow’s and Hydra.  Hydra flanked them, but failed to destroy them.  They combat reformed and killed him off the following turn.  In the bottom of the 6th the xbow (with the help of much magic through the game) took down the weakened horde.  When the points were tallied up, I won by 300’ish points.  1-0

Game 2: DoC v Warriors of Chaos

My opponents list was fairly weak.  2 hellcannons, juiced Tzeentch sorcerer, BSB, 2 units of Khorne Knights, 1 unit of fast cav, 1 tiny unit of Nurgle warriors, 1 tiny unit of Khorne warriors.  Quick summary.  Lost the BT in the top of the 2nd due to magic / shooting and a poor CC phase against Chaos Knights w/MoK.  Rest of the game had my horde units destroying the rest of his army.  CF units were able to confuse the other enemy units and pretty much allow me to take on his army as I saw fit.  When the game ended all he had left was a single fleeing Khorne Knight.

Game 3: DoC (K53) v Skaven (HRR)

First off, both HRR and myself were at the top of the leader board at this time in the tournament, so this was going to decide who won.  I honestly felt pretty good going in… after the Turn 5 Table HRR handed me, I felt a bit embarrassed that I was actually confident prior to the game starting.  As the victor gets to write the history, I suggest checking out HRRs blog for the deets of the battle, but I’ll provide a brief summary (the wounds are still fresh).  Early in the game, shooting was effective for HRR, but nothing that was game changing.  His magic on the other hand was PAINFUL!  His report didn’t go into detail describing the damage he did, but it made a huge difference in the game.  There were some huge blunders I made with my BT (that HRR was kind enough to point out on the way home) that had I not done… well, they may have postponed the Table until turn 6.  There is a VERY sneaky trick that HRR has done to me twice now.  The next time I see him, I’m going to see if he’ll blog about it.  Each time he’s pulled it off on me (and yes, he did it in our game at the tournament), it really throws a monkey wrench in my plans.

The results: HRR took 1st place, but also got a painting award.  Evil Avi and his Lizzy’s took 2nd.  HRR’s beat down on me was so severe that he knocked me down to not only 3rd, but a tie for 3rd.  OUCH!!!

The loot: For prize support we got gift certs to the store.  I picked up a board game “Last Night on Earth” with my loot.

Thanks for reading!

Beastmen Rev 4

Yes… Rev 4.  I can’t make my  mind up!  So, my bud from Huston dropped some knowledge on me via some emails over the past couple days.  His insight was so… wise …that I swore he just copied it from the internet somewhere.  Anywho, it sounds obvious, but Beastmen are a close combat army… period!  I’ve kinda been understanding that the past few days.  I’ve freed up points to bring a Giant to boost my CC effectiveness, but he hasn’t quite filled the role I need him to do.  My bud accomplishes this through a larger unit of Bestigors, but I’m gonna try something else (we can’t be the exact same… can we?).  I’m going to bring more characters.  They’re not killers, but there are many of them.  I’ll try this out and tweak as required.  I need to zero in on a list though because Lone Wolf is just weeks away.  Anywho, here is the list.  Throw darts at it… I need the help.  Thanks!

Lords: Ok, I was running both GBSs with LoB.  I took Tim G’s advice to run one LoD.  I like it!  Not so much for Purple Sun, but for Soulblight and Doom & Darkness.  The single model killer spells are good too.  They’ll help with some of the monsters I may have to deal with (HPAs, Hydras, Steggies…).  No major change from the LoB GBS.  He’s been consistantly good for me.

1 Great Bray-Shaman @ 289.0 Pts
General; Lore of Death; Magic Level 4; 2ndWeapon; Braystaff
     Talisman of Endurance [30.0]
     Power Stone [20.0]
1 Great Bray-Shaman @ 309.0 Pts
Lore of Beasts; Magic Level 4; 2ndWeapon; Braystaff
     Talisman of Preservation [45.0]
     Jagged Dagger [10.0]
     Gouge-Tusks [15.0]

Heros: I still have the BSB.  No Change.  I’ve gone down to a single lvl 2 with LoS.  Miasma is a great spell to get dice out of the enemy.  I can single die it, and force a die or two outta the enemy!  For his other spell I like to get Enfeebling Foe or Withering.  Most the other spells aren’t bad though (no kidding, right?).  I’ve included 2 additional Wargors.  Their both equipped to survive, but many more attacks with re-rolls doesn’t hurt.  I’m going with quantity over quality here.  My ace in the hole is Savage Beast though.  That can always get you out of a pickle.  Of course Wild Form is always there, and I can play some nasty tricks with Smoke and Mirrors too.

1 Wargor @ 206.0 Pts
     Heavy Armour; Shield; Battle Standard
     Beast Banner [75.0]
     Gnarled Hide [15.0]
1 Bray Shaman @ 122.0 Pts
Lore of Shadow; Magic Level 1; 2ndWeapon; Braystaff
     Hagtree Fetish [20.0]
     Ruby Ring of Ruin [25.0]
1 Wargor @ 124.0 Pts
     Great Weapon
     Armour of Fortune [35.0]
1 Wargor @ 106.0 Pts
     Heavy Armour; Shield
     Ram Horn Helm [15.0]

Core: No change here.  I had to drop 1 Gor to free up points.

36 Gor Herd @ 321.0 Pts
     2ndWeapon; Standard; Musician
     1 Foe-Render @ [10.0] Pts
37 Gor Herd @ 329.0 Pts
     2ndWeapon; Standard; Musician
     1 Foe-Render @ [10.0] Pts

Special: Not much change here.  I had to drop a few bestigors to free up points.  I also dropped the unit champion per a suggestion from a reader, but I cannot remember his name (sorry!).

5 Harpies @ 55.0 Pts
5 Harpies @ 55.0 Pts
23 Bestigor Herd @ 309.0 Pts
Great Weapon; Heavy Armour; Standard; Musician
     Standard of Discipline [15.0]

Rare: No change here.  The Ghorgon is a CHAMP!  I got him up to 12 attacks just last night.  w00t!

1 Ghorgon @ 275.0 Pts
     Frenzy

Upcoming Events

Well, looks like we got 2 tournaments lined up.  First one will be at Table Top Games in KC this weekend.  Been awhile since I’ve gamed there.  Since then they’ve relocated, but the gaming space is supposed to be WAY better than before (and it was pretty pimp back then).  Looks like a 3 round tournament at 2000 points.  I wish it would have been at 2500 points, but at this point, I’d play in a 500 point tournament because I’m jonesing so bad.  For this tournament I’ll be taking my Demons of Chaos (Khorne of kourse <— lolz “k”).  My Beast are just not in a state where I can knock ’em out to be presentable.  I’ll post a list for my Demons later this week…

Next tournament will be the Lone Wolf Indy GT in Dallas.  This will be the third year in a row that we’ve gone.  I’ll be taking my Beastmen to this tournament.  My goal is to win 2 games this year.  The past 2 years I have done… horrible to say the least.  Anywho, this should get my butt in gear to finish my army.  I’ll also need to zero in on a list I’m comfortable with.  Check back for updates.

Thank you!
